Change of plan! Ward to Kaikoura - 83kms
Woke to a perfect cycling day.
Got away at 7.30am and made reasonable progress (that included a couple of stints of hill walking) until we came upon 3kms of uncyclable road works!
A road worker in his truck saw our dilemma and immediately offered to drive us and our gear to the end of the works. The bikes and trailers were dumped unceremoniously in the back of the truck, and we joined the driver in the cab.
Lucky us! We missed out on tackling 3kms of nasty hills!
Our computers had been knocked around a bit, but Del got them back on track.
We passed the lovely, old St Oswald's church. It had been badly damaged in the Kaikoura earthquake and the community was raising money for its repair.
We had morning tea at The Store in Kekerengu then cycled on across the Clarence River to Clarence.
Our lunch stop was The Lobster Cafe.
The waitress there warned us that the camp that we planned to stay at had been badly damaged in the Kaikoura earthquake. We cycled past it and decided that it was a far too windy spot for our tent.
There was a strong tail wind. We decided to take advantage of it and push on to Kaikoura.
Breathtaking views of dark mountains and craggy cliffs dropping down to the sea and the lovely sound of waves breaking on the beach.
Here we are in Kaikoura, feeling tired but pleased with the day. We'll spend a couple of nights here, under canvas, to recover for the next big day to Cheviot. Mind you, $50 for an unpowered tent site is a little over the top, don't you agree?
Wow, a big day - well done! (and yes $50 does seem a bit much!) xx
ReplyDeleteAmazing scenery in that part of the world. Looks so quiet! xx
ReplyDeleteThat's it! The Lobster place has done it for me - locally caught or silly question?
ReplyDeleteKaikoura means 'crayfish food'. The area is famous for them - and all things fishy!
